The Shanghai Softball League democratically votes on certain rules each season to better suit the playing styles of its members.

PITCHING: There is a 12 ft height ceiling limit on balls pitched by the pitcher in regular season and Cakey Cup/CJ CUP tournament games. A pitch-height floor limit of at least 6 ft will be enforced.

COIN FLIP: Coin Flip before each game in the regular season to determine Home and Visitor. Coin flip must be done by the home plate umpire with both team coaches present. Team with better record calls “heads” or “tails” (“one” or “flower” when using RMB). Winner of coin toss gets to decide whether they want to be the Home team or the Visiting team.

1-1 PITCH COUNT START: All batters will start their at-bat with a one-ball, one-strike pitch count in regular season games as well as Cakey Cup tournament games.

TIME LIMITS: The home plate umpire will time each game, and no new inning will start after 60 minutes. If a game has not finished by the 60-minute mark, then the current inning being played will be deemed the last inning. If the game is tied after the last inning is played out, then each subsequent team at-bat will start with the last batted out starting on second base. Teams have one minute in between innings to exchange positions on the field. There is no warm up in between innings and the first batter should enter the box as soon as possible.

RUN RULE: The game is considered over if the opposing team is ahead by 12 runs after the 5th inning or 10 runs after the 6th inning.

TIE GAMES: If the game is tied after the last inning is played out, then each subsequent team at-bat will start with the last batted out starting on second base. Teams have one minute in between innings to exchange positions on the field. There is no warm up in between innings and the first batter should enter the box as soon as possible. Each inning will start with zero outs.

COURTESY RUNNER: Before each game, each team should declare which player in the lineup will receive a courtesy runner. A courtesy runner eligibility is not transferable. In other words, if a starting player who has been declared as eligible for a courtesy runner leaves the game, his/her replacement is not eligible for a courtesy runner. If the eligible player re-enters the game, he/she would once again be eligible for a courtesy runner. The runner will be the "Last-batted-out" meaning the last player that gets out as a direct result of a ball they swung at (ie, a pop-up, ground-out, or strike-out). A player that hits into a fielder's choice play is not considered the last-batted-out unless he/she somehow gets thrown out on the play. If, in the first inning of the game, there are no batted outs and a pinch runner is needed, then the last batter in the batting order can act as a pinch runner until a batted out occurs.

ILLEGAL BATS: All metal bats that are used on the Baseball Field must be stamped and approved by the League Committee. Legal bats need to have an ASA marking (and can be found on the current ASA Certified Equipment List), ISF marking (only the 2005 ISF marking is allowed), or a JSA marking. Amateur Softball Association (ASA), the International Softball Federation (ISF), or the Japanese Softball Association (JSA). Any team caught trying to use an illegal bat in a game will be warned once. If a team that has been warned once in a given season, and is caught using an illegal bat again, they automatically forfeit that game.

PROTECTIVE GEAR: Pitchers must always wear a protective mask while pitching to prevent possible head injuries from batted balls. This is a mandatory rule in our league. Batting helmets are not mandatory, but are recommended to prevent head injuries while running the bases (particularly from balls thrown by infielders/outfielders).

TIE-BREAKER RULES FOR DETERMINING LEAGUE STANDINGS and/or TOURNAMENT SEEDINGS:

  1. W/L record in head-to-head games for teams that are tied in the standings.
  2. Run Differential (RD) between the two (or more) teams if their W/L record is equal in their head-to-head games.
  3. TOTAL RD against ALL of the teams.
